Cattle-rearers in Chuadanga concerned over price

Farmers and farm owners of sacrificial animals are now very frustration over not getting fair price of their animals in four upazila of the district for COVID-19 spread out recently. 

According to District Livestock Department a total of 38,842 cattle and 1,45,039 goats and sheep have been reared as sacrificial animals in the district. At least 6,257 cattle is in sadar upazila, 18,479 in Alamdanga upazila, 6,455 in Damurhuda upazila and 7,6521 in Jibannagar upazila. On the other hand 24,567 goats and sheep are in sadar upazila, 40,218 in Alamdanga upazila, 34,345 in Damurhuda upazila and 45,914 in Jibannagar upazla. 

It is learnt from DLO of Chuadanga that about 1,742 farms are in sadar upazila, 1,315 in Damurhuda upazila, 1,750 in Jibannagar upazila and 2,530 in Alamdanga upazila. Cows, goats and sheep have been reared at the farms by farmers, unemployed educated youths and day laborers. 

It is learnt, rearing of sacrificial animals have been more than demand of buyers. After meeting the demand of sacrificial animals many of these will be unsold in the district. 

Kamrul Islam, a day laborer of village Dasomi in Daurhuda upazila said he reared a cow. He expended at tk. 80,000 for rearing the cow but buyers asked him to purchase it at tk. 60,000. 

Hazera Khatun of village Joyrampur in Damurhuda Upazila of Chuadanga district said she reared four goats for selling on the eve of Eid-ul Azha. She took these goats to Dugdugi Poshu Haat but nobody asked her to buy. Later she came back home with frustration. 

Muktar Hossain of village Majhad in Alamdanga upazila of the district told the Bangladesh Post that he bought at least 102 cattle from different poshu haats last Eid-ul Azha. This year on the eve of Eid-ul Azha buys 10 cows from farmers and farm owners up to date. 

Nazrul Islam, a businessman of cattle of village Boalmari in sadar upazila said he avoided himself from purchasing cows due to COVID-19 this year. 

Though District Administration and Upazila Administrations have taken step like `on line poshu haat’ for sellers and buyers but sellers do not get enough buyers through this system, sources added. 

On the other hand a few numbers of owners of sacrificial animals and buyers are seen at Poshu Haats in the district recently.
