2,500 families get Tk 1,000 each from Kanaighat Association UK

Kanaighat Association UK, a social platform of Bangladeshi (Kanaighat, Sylhet)-origin people living in the United Kingdom, has provided 2,500 needy families impacted by the Covid-19 crisis a cash assistance of Tk 1,000 each at Kanaighat upazila in Sylhet. 

A total of Tk 25 lakh cash was distributed among the people who have become unemployed and helpless due to nationwide shutdown following coronavirus outbreak in 90 wards of nine unions and municipal area of the upazila.

The distribution was completed through Union and Ward based events from May 14 to 18, where local UNO, Municipal Mayor, UP Chairmen, members and others were present as guests.

Many people of Kanaighat upazila expressed their happiness over the initiative of Kanaighat Association UK.  They said that the association set up a great example through distributing cash Tk 25 lakh among poor families. 

Former Vice Chairman of Kanaighat Upazila Parishad Maryam Begum, Dhaka University student Shamsul Islam Chowdhury of Chhotodesh village, Emdadur Rahman of Narainpur village and some other people of Kanaighat upazila said that many poor families were benefited from Kanaighat Association UK.

Leaders of the organisation said that people of Kanaighat living in the United Kingdom had extended their hands of cooperation for the implementation of this project by raising the amount.  

President of Kanaighat Association UK Nazirul Islam and its Secretary Mohammed Mokhlisur Rahman and Treasurer Ahmed Iqbal Chowdhury thanked all members of the association as well as the Kanaighat residents living in the UK for their hard work in implementing this great initiative.

The leaders said that we hope that our new generation, who will grow up in the UK, will also remain connected to their roots in Kanaighat through this association.

The Kanaighat Association UK is a registered organisation with the UK Charity Commission. It was founded in 1985 by a small number of UK expatriates of Kanaighat.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post over cell phone, Mohammed Mokhlisur Rahman said that the Kanaighat Association UK has been working tirelessly for the betterment of the poor and helpless people of Kanaighat for the last 35 years since its inception. The association has also been working for development of education and other sectors of Kanaighat, he added.

He informed that the association implemented a 22-lakh education project at Kanaighat upazila in 2018 through distributing computers and cash among educational institutes and students.
