A case has been filed over the death of journalist Burhan Uddin Muzakkir who succumbed to his bullet injuries received while performing duty during a factional clash of two groups of ruling party men in Noakhali.

His father Maulana Nawab Ali, a retired primary school teacher, filed the case with Companiganj Police Station in Noakhali on Tuesday, four days after the incident and two days after Muzakkir’s death.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station Mir Zahidul Haque Rony confirmed the matter. He said that the case was recorded at 11:00 am on Tuesday. Several unidentified people were made accused in the case. Police are trying to identify those involved since the incident, the OC added.

Local people said supporters of Mayor of Bashurhat Abdul Quader Mirza and former Upazila Chairman of Companiganj Mizanur Rahman Badal were engaged in the clash on Friday. Burhan Uddin Muzakkir received bullet injuries there. Later, he died in Dhaka Medical College Hospital during treatment.

Meanwhile, protest programme continues in Noakhali and other parts of the country demanding justice for the journalist.

A human chain was formed in front of Noakhali Press Club on Tuesday morning.

Noakhali units of Bangladesh Mufassil Journalists Forum and Bangladesh Reporters Club jointly organised the human chain programme.

Speakers at the human chain said that journalists cannot be followers of anyone. We have to be vigilant so that no one can do politics with corpses. They demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits through a fair and impartial investigation at the time.
