Case filed over attack on AL candidate’s election office

A case has been filed in connection with the attack on the election office of Awami League party candidate Mohiuddin Bachchu in Chattogram-10 by-election.  An unnamed 300 people have been accused in the case where 25 of them already were arrested.

Awami League activist Ariful Islam on Thursday filed the case at Khulshi police station in the city.

Khulshi police station officer-in-charge (OC) Santosh Kumar Chakma said, a case has been registered in connection with the attack on the election office of the boat candidate and vandalism.  300 people have been accused without naming anyone.  So far 25 people have been arrested in the incident.

On Wednesday afternoon, BNP started the pre-announced program ‘March’ from in front of the party office at Nasimon Bhavan.  

The march ends at Dewanhat junction after visiting various places through Lalkhan Bazar of the city.  Later, while returning, several leaders and activists of the march started pelting bricks at the election office of Mohiuddin Bachchu, a candidate for the Chattogram-10 by-election.  At one point, they entered the office with sticks and severely beat and vandalized the leaders and activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League and Awami League who were waiting there.

Meanwhile, 4 private cars and 10 motorcycles were vandalized in front of Mohiuddin Bachchu's office.  They went away after rampaging. Awami League and BNP retaliated and some areas turned into battlegrounds.  4 cars including 10 motorcycles were vandalized in the incident.  At least 20 people were injured in the counter-attack.

Eyewitness sources said that after the attack on Mohiuddin Bachchu's office, when the news of the incident spread, a lot of tension was created in the area.  At this time the leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League rushed to the spot.  At around 6 pm, a large number of activists gathered and retaliated against BNP's Nasiman Bhavan office on Noor Ahmad Road, one kilometer away.  At that time, chairs inside the office, furniture including window glass and a motorcycle outside were vandalized.

In this incident, tension spread among the leaders and activists of Awami League.  They blocked the road and vandalized the party office of BNP on Noor Ahmad Road of Kotwali police station in the city.  However, no case was filed in the BNP office vandalism incident.
