A case has been filed against Godagari Upazila Chairman Jane Alam on the allegation of filling up a pond in the upazila by violating Environmental Law.

Lawyer Salah Uddin Biswas filed the case with the Environment Court on Thursday. Five more anonymous persons have been accused in the case.

Earlier on Monday a news article relating to the filling of a pond in Godagari was published in a national daily. The news said a 0.58-acre of pond under JL No-188,  boundary line(dag) number 285 at Paramanandapur mouza under Godagari sadar union was being filled up by the Upazila Administration of Godagari. According to the records of the upazila Land Office, the area has been classified as a pond under No-1 khas Khatian.

Plaintiff of the case Advocate Salah Uddin Biswas informed, after reading the news article, he filed the case under Public Interest. The photocopy of the published news has also been submitted to the court. Lawyer Raihan Kabir filed the case in favour of Salah Uddin Biswas.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Abu Taleb accepted the case and fixed May 22 as the date of hearing the case in presence of an Inspector of the Department of Environment.

Godagari UNO Jane Alam in this connection informed, he is not still aware of the case. He claimed, no pond is being filled and the place where the soil is being dumped is not a pond. Some local land pirates had filled the pond earlier and were occupying the place and the Upazila Administration was recovering the landmass. And those land pirates might have filed a case against him just to harass him.
