Carew & Co earns record profit in 22-23 fiscal year

Darshana’s Carew & Co has earned a profit of Tk 100 crore in the financial year 2022/23 by producing and marketing only sugarcane sugar, molasses, biofertilizers, hand sanitizers and high quality domestic and foreign spirit liquors, officials said.

However, the sugarcane growers of the area said that if hybrid sugarcane innovation and production and sugarcane cultivation are increased, new doors of possibilities will be opened in Carew and Company.

 According to sugar mill sources, a complex called Carew & Company Limited was established in Darshana in 1938 with 3 thousand 572 acres of its own land.

Sugarcane cultivation was started on Carew's own 2,450 acres and 2,500 acres of sugarcane farmers in the area. Abdul Halim, Carew's chemist, said that after extracting sugar from sugarcane, 3 other by-products such as molasses and residue are obtained. The by-products are processed to produce country spirit liquor, rectify spirit, extra neutral alcohol, denatured spirit, absolute alcohol. From which biofertilizers are produced with domestic spirits and 9 brands of foreign liquors, hand sanitizers, pressed mud and waste water.

Bio fertilizer, 50 ml hand sanitizer and liquor spirits are produced in 180, 375 and 750 ml bottles. In the current year, 39 lakh 20 thousand bottles of foreign liquor and 26 lakh liters of country spirit liquor are produced.

Carew has its own 13 warehouses and 3 sales centers to sell its products. The Narcotics Control Department has approved two new sales centers in Kuakata and Cox's Bazar this year, and plans to close down two sales centers in Ramu and Rajshahi, Keru's GM said. In the financial year 2022/23, the marketed and sold value of Carew's products sugar, biofertilizer, hand sanitizer, country spirit liquor and foreign liquor spirit stood at Tk 367 crore in all centers.

Abdul Hannan, president of Carew and Company's Sugarcane Cultivation Welfare Association and general secretary Abdul Bari, said that if hybrid sugarcane production and sugarcane cultivation can be increased in a short time, Carew and Company can open the doors of great potential. Besides, the price of sugar and sugarcane should be increased and intercropping with sugarcane should be made compulsory. Managing Director of Carew Sugar Mill, Mohammad Mosharf Hossain said, after the establishment of Carew, this is the first time that the highest produced product has been sold for Tk 367 crore. 100 crore profit by combining the losses of 9 agricultural farms and sugar with revenue to the government treasury. The previous year in 2021 the net profit was 50 crores 70 lakhs and in 2020 the net profit was 21 crores during the pandemic.

He said that last week, a three-day workshop was conducted with the officers of Natore, Faridpur, Mobarakganj and Carew sugar mills to increase the yield by cultivating sugarcane in an advanced manner and to do companion crops with sugarcane. Joint Secretary to the Government, Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industry Corporation Director Khandaker Azim Ahmed, Joint Secretary Corporation Director Pulak Kanti Barua spoke as guests at the workshop.

In the current year, it has been possible to earn 90 lakhs 90 thousand by leasing 593 acres of idle land of mills for 6 months and 81 lakhs by leasing 350 acres of sugarcane land.

Member of Parliament for Chua­danga-2 Constituency Ali Azgar Togar said that the Carew sugar mill is the only economic driving force in the region. The main raw material is sugarcane. Various programs have already been taken to increase sugarcane cultivation. 

Simultaneously, the work of BMR and Automation to modernize the mill is going on in full swing.
