There is an allegation that, influential people with the help of some unscrupulous officials are grabbing a canal at Mathbaria upazila in Pirojpur district, according to media reports.
The canal has connected many areas in the locality. The people in the areas go to different places by boat through the canal. The canal also plays a great role in trade and commerce in the area.
The canal was an artery among the people in the area. If it is filled up, the business will collapse in the areas.
Local people also informed the upazila nirbahi officer. But, the local administration has not taken any step in this regard.The government is committed to resuming extensive drives to free the illegally grabbed rivers, canals and water bodies across the country. The fact of the matter is that their commitments always remain unfulfilled due to what they say “serious difficulties and challenges” caused by the local influentials and hoodlums.

But, we do believe that country’s water bodies will get back their life from eviction drives and none, even ‘godfathers’ and ‘dons’, would be spared in this regard as Sheikh Hasina's government has taken a harsh stance against such crimes and it has already made clear its "zero-tolerance policy" against rivers and water bodies
grabbers.
In this regard, we are calling upon the lawmakers, all politicaly influential and people from all walks of life to stand beside the authorities concerned, local administration and the members of law enforcement agencies and extend all-out supports to oust the grabbers at any cost.
The people of the country will also get relief when the grabbers will be ousted and it is the demand of the people as rivers are the lifeline of Bangladesh.
