Call for rooting out communal forces from country

Eminent authors and poets on Tuesday called upon the people to get united to root out communal and fundamental forces from the country.

They made the call while speaking at a programme held at Bangla Academy in the capital, marking the Humayun Azad Day. Lekhok-Prokashak Forum organised the event. 

Poet Mohammad Nurul Huda, also Director General (DG) of Bangla Academy, urged all to work together for making a secular Bangladesh, which was a dream of the author Humyaun Azad.

Referring to the great contributions of Humyaun Azad in building a progressive society, he said, “Now 

we have to work to promote the ideals of Humayun Azad.”   

Ekushey Padak winning late poet Professor Humayun Azad advocated for progressive thinking and encouraged readers to have an open mind.

He criticised religious violence and raised voice against anomalies in society through his works. He wrote 60 books, including 10 poetry books, 13 novels, 22 books on literary criticism, eight children’s books and seven books on linguistics. He made a lasting impression on readers with his noted book ‘Nari’.

Humayun Azad enriched Bangla literature with his works like Fuler Gondhe Ghum Ashe Na and Lal Nil Dipabali.

He craved for knowledge more than anything else. Humayun Azad was a fearless writer. He was known for his outspoken personality. He stood against anomalies in the society through his works till the last day of his life.

Humayun Azad came under attack by militants on the night of 26 February, 2004 on the way back from Amar Ekushey Book Fair. The miscreants hacked the author, leaving him critically injured.

The next day, his brother Manjur Kabir filed a case with Ramna Police Station. Humayun Azad died in Germany on 12 August while undergoing treatment.
