A daylong cake festival (pitha utsab) was held to preserve the tradition of rural Bengal at Lakshmipur National Ideal School and College premises in Laksmipur on Saturday. Laksmipur Sadar Upazila Chairman AKM Salah Uddin Tipu inaugurated the festival organised by Bagbari National Ideal School and College in the city.
Teachers and students set hundreds of cake stalls on the occasion. People from all walks of life crowded the festival. Eating cakes in winter is a part Bengali tradition. Organisers said this initiative was taken to introduce the new generation to this tradition of rural Bangladesh.
More than two hundred types of local cakes including Jira pitha, Bhapa, Nakshi, Chitoi, Patishapta, Jamai Baron pitha and pitha made of pulse and palm were displayed in more than hundred stalls in the festival. People enjoyed the cake festival a lot. This arrangement attracted the young generation and introduced them to various kinds of traditional cakes. Organizers believe the lost heritage of rural Bengal will make a comeback through these kind of initiative.
