Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Jhenidah has started evicting the unauthorized structures from the banks and beds of river and canals in different areas of the district. They have primarily identified 744 grabbers in Kotchandpur, Shailkupa and Harinakundu upazila of the district.
Enlisting the names of 73 grabbers of Nabaganga River in Jhenidah Sadar, they have evicted a number of illegal structures from the bank and beds of river for the second day on Wednesday.
BWDB sub divisional engineer (SDE) Foysal Ahmed said at least 744 grabbers have been occupying the land of the board at Langalbandh and Katlagari sub division under Shaikupa upazila, Chungarbil area of Koctandpur and Ramnagar Satbridge area of Harinakundu upazila for a long.
The occupiers were served repeated notice to remove the unauthorized structures at their own cost, while they were not paying hid to them at all. They (BWDB) has to count Taka about 30 lakh to evict the illegal pucca and semi pucca structures in the said area.
Mosha Das, Sadananda Das, Antaram Ads, Radha Das, Palash Kumar Saha, Mintu Das, Kanta Das and Sarajit Kumar Biswas of Chalklapara area are among the grabbers. The list was signed by BWDB executive engineer (XEN) Ahsan Habub. Engineers Jakir Hossain and Selim Reza said the occupiers were detected by the joint initiatives of Jhenidah district administration, Jhenidah municipality and BWDB.
Deputy Commissioner Saroj Kumar Nath when contacted said the initiative was taken to regain the navigability of the rivers and canals for the interest of the people, which will continue until and unless the eviction is ended.
