Bus movement from Jhalokathi to 16 south-western districts was halted in protest of the harassment of a driver at the hands of goons of bus owners association. The driver was allegedly beaten by those miscreants after he denied to give extortion.

Protesting the incident, Jhalokathi Inter-district Bus Workers Union (JIBWU) called for an indefinite strike from Saturday morning, inflicting untold sufferings on the passengers. Miscreants loyal to Barisal-Patuakhali Bus Owners’ Association allegedly attacked the bus driver on Friday.

Bahadur Chawdhury, JIBWU general secretary, said the followers of Barisal-Patuakhali Minibus Owners’ Association demanded extortion as parking fee from Milon, a driver from Jhalokathi, who refused to give the money.

“The miscreants then beat him up cruelly. Later, he was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital,” he said, adding that bus labourers’ union of the district, protesting the incident, called for the indefinite strike.

Barishal-bound passengers, especially the students, alleged that they have been suffering from extreme problems due to the suddent strike.

“We are being forced to travel by motorcycle or battery-driven auto-rickshaws spending double cost,” they said.
