Bus fare hike adds new sufferings

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Chattogram has said that raising fares in response to the demands of bus owners and workers amid the outbreak of the corona virus will add new sufferings to people's lives.

The organization said in a statement on Saturday that the jobless people were already in financial and emotional straits due to the long lockdown. If bus fares are allowed to be increased there, it will be tantamount to road robbery.

This is because the bus owners and workers do not collect the fare at the rate fixed by the government and takes the passengers hostage and collect double or triple the fare.

The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Chittagong has urged the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and BRTA not to reach a decision like increase of bus fares in times of crisis.

Corona can provide fuel at affordable prices if needed during the Great Depression and half of the passengers on each public transport can be transported in  compliance with hygiene rules.

Unemployed people are in dire financial straits due to long vacations in the history of the country. The statement said that public transport can start transport services by charging the existing fare in compliance with the health rules.

The speakers were: CAB Central Committee Vice President SM Nazer Hossain, Chattogram Divisional General Secretary Kazi Iqbal Bahar Chabery, Metropolitan President Jasmine Sultana Paru, General Secretary Ajay Mitra Shanku, Joint Secretary Touhidul Islam and South District President Abdul Mannan.
