Farmers are expecting outstanding production of onion as they have started selling onion with better profit during this Robi season in the Khulna Agricultural Region.
Currently, farmers are seen passing busy days with harvesting growing plants of onion amid suitable climate conditions in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail districts with the hope of bumper production. Though harvesting of onions is yet to be completed, farmers have started selling with better profit.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said a total of 1,778.5 hectares of land was cultivated against the DAE target of 1,905 hectares with a production target of 19,736 metric tonnes of onion in Khulna gricultural zone that covers Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail districts.
In Khulna district, a total of 259 hectares of land was cultivated against the DAE target of 305 hectares with a production target of 3,111 metric tonnes of onion.
In Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail districts 148.5, 651 and 720 hectares of land were cultivated against the DAE setting target of 210, 680 and 710 hectares of land with a production target of 2,094, 7,140 and 7,391 metric tonnes of onion respectively, the DAE officials said.
Talking to BSS, Additional Director of DAE, Khulna Zone, Mohon Kumar Ghosh said he asked the field level officials to advise the farmers harvesting the onion as early as possible as the weather can be changed at any time.
Keeping all aside, farmers are very much hopeful about better production of onions in the four districts of Khulna agricultural region during this season. Rustum Ali, 43, a farmer of Sutarkhali union of Dacope upazila told BSS today that he cultivated onion on two bighas of land this season.
Last season, he got 120-140 maunds per bigha.
He got more than Taka one lakh per bigha. Production cost was around Taka 50,000 to 60,000 per bigha of land.
Department of Agriculture Extension supported the farmers to increase the production of onions as the demand for onions is high, Rustam said, adding that he is hopeful of a bumper production of onions this season.
