Bumper mustard output in Barishal, farmers happy

In Barisal's Babugonj Upazila, only yellow color is being observed across the vast field. The entire crop field is covered with the yellow color of mustard flowers. The yellow color of mustard flower has been noticed in every union of Babuganj Upazila.

In the absence of natural calamities in the current season, mustard cultivation has increased significantly. If the weather is favorable and the mustard can be brought home on time, the farmers will get a good price, according to the officials of the Directorate of Agriculture Extension of Babuganj Upazila.

According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, Assistant Agricultural Officers are working with farmers in the field every day to increase the cultivation of oil crops as a special initiative taken by the government. As a result mustard cultivation in Babuganj has exceeded the target. In 6 unions in the upazila, farmers have succeeded in cultivating mustard of Bari Sarisha-14, Bari Sarisha-17, Bari Sarisha-15 and Bina-9 varieties. In Rakudiya of Babuganj Upazila, it was found that mustard seeds are growing in the fields of Rakudiya and Kedarpur union. From a distance, it seems that the crop field is covered with a huge yellow sheet.

Rakudiya village mustard farmer Rahat Sardar said, I have cultivated mustard on 1 hectare land. This time yield is better than last time. I hope to be able to meet the needs of the family and sell them throughout the year. Mustard cultivation has relatively low cost and high profit. Everyone should grow mustard.

Arifur Rahman, a mustard farmer of Chandpasha Union, said that the labor and cost of mustard cultivation are low. Therefore, he cultivated mustard. According to Babuganj Upazila Agriculture Office, the target of mustard cultivation was set at 260 hectares of land in the upazila this year. 390 hectares have been cultivated. 130 hectares of mustard has been cultivated more than the target. 1-1.5 tons of mustard per hectare will be produced if the weather is favorable. Accordingly, there is a possibility of 500-600 tons of mustard production.

Last year the cultivation area was estimated at 290 hectares. 300 hectares were cultivated. And mustard production was 381 metric tons.

This time mustard cultivation has surpassed all previous records.

Babuganj Upazila Agricultural Officer Mamunur Rahman said that the special initiative taken by the government is working to increase the production of oil crops.

In Babuganj, the cultivation of 130 hectares of land is more than the target. We are providing incentives and advice to the farmers from the government. We are hopeful that mustard production will be good this year.
