Bumper mango yield likely in Naogaon

Mango orchards have been established on more than 1,075 hectares of land in Barendra district Naogaon this year as compared to last year. According to the local Department of Agricultural Extention, the yield has also been bumper.

Shamsul Wadud, Deputy Director of the district agricultural extension department, said the total mango orchard in the district last season was 24,775 hectares while this year mango orchard has been created on 25,850 hectares of land.

This season 440 hectares of land has been brought under mango farming in Naogaon Sadar Upazila, 35 hectares in Raninagar Upazila, 112 hectares in Atrai Upazila, 335 hectares in Badalgachhi Upazila, 625 hectares in Mahadevpur Upazila, 3,015 hectares in Patnitala Upazila, 675 hectares in Dhamairhat Upazila, 8,525 hectares in Shapahar Upazila, 10,550 hectares in Porsha upazila, 400 hectares in Manda upazila and 1,130 hectares of land in Niamatpur upazila. 

Guti Mango, Gopalbhog, Rani Pasand, Khirsapat, Himsagar, Nak Fazli, Langra, Fazli, Amropali, Arshina, Bari-4 and Jhinuk varieties of mango have been produced more in the district this year. According to last year's calculations, an average target of 12 metric tonnes of mango production per hectare has been set for the current season. As such, the total mango production in the district this year is expected to be 3 lakh 10 thousand 200 metric tonnes worth more than Tk 1.5 thousand crore. 

He added that mango production is expected to be higher than the target set this year as there was not much storm this year. As a result, mango did not suffer much damage and there is a high possibility of producing more mangoes than the set target. 

Meanwhile, mango picking has officially started in the district from May 20. Besides, Gopalbhog and Ranipachand mangoes will be harvested from May 27, Khirsapat and Himsagar from June 2, Nak Fazli from June 4, Langra from June 10, Fazli from June 20, Amropali from June 22 and Arshina, Bari-4 along with Jhinuk varieties of mangoes will be harvested from July 8, he added.
