Litchi trees in Dinajpur have now sprouted with huge flowers. If the weather condition remains suitable, the litchi growers of the district are expecting a bumper production of Litchi in the district during the coming season.
According to sources, among 13 upazilas of the district , Biral, Chirir Bandar, Birganj and Khansama upazilas are the most famous for Litchi cultivation. Varieties of litchi including China-3, Bedana, Bombai, Madrasi and Kanthali lithci are the most famous and popular among the consumers. For its tremendous demand, the number of litchi orchards are also being increased in the district day by day.
Litchi growers of the district informed, flowers have appeared on most of the litchi trees of the district. They are also expecting a bumper production of the fruit this year. They further informed, litchi worth several crore Taka is produced in the district every year. After covering local demand, litchi of Dinajpur is also supplied to various places of the country.
Tohidul Iqbal, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension, Dinajpur, informed a total of 5,100 hectares of land have been brought under litchi cultivation this year.
Most litchi is produced in Biral upazila of the district. Though litchi is produced all across the country, there is an extra-ordinary demand of litchi of Dinajpur due to its taste and flavour. He mentioned, litchi produced in Dinajpur will also be exported abroad. Already litchi trees of the district are in their flowering stage and he hoped, the production of litchi will be better this year unless there is no damage of the fruit due to inclement weather.
