'Bulbul' causes Tk48 crore losses of farmers in Khulna

Nearly 40,000 marginal farmers, sharecroppers and even well-off farmers of Khulna district incurred a loss amounting to Taka 480 million (48 crore) due to damage of crops and vegetables caused by the severe impact of recent cyclone Bulbul.

Elsewhere at the crop fields of the district, the impact of damage caused by cyclone Bulbul was clearly visible. There was extensive damage of standing Aman paddy, vegetables, mustard, betel-leaf, Papiya and Banana. 

District Agriculture Office sources informed, there was a damage of Aman paddy of 25,000 hectares of land amounting Taka 239.4 million( 23 crore 94 lakh), vegetables of 864 hectares amounting Taka 120.03 million( 12 crore three lakh), mustard of 40 hectares amount Takathree million( 30 lakh), betel leaf of 36 hectares amounting Taka 87.9 million( eight crore 79 lakh) and Papiya of 152 hectares amounting Taka 31.80 million( three crore 18 lakh).

Mosaddeque Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer of Dumuria upazila informed, there was severe damage of Papiya and Banana trees at villages Baratia, Solua, Sarafpur and Rangpur. The standing Aman paddy of Sarafpur and Boratia villages was completely damaged. More than 2,000 farmers of the upazila have become completely helpless by losing their crops and vegetables in cyclone Bulbul, he added.
