Using the city’s roads and pavements by pedestrians has now become very risky, causing frequent accidents apart from triggering traffic gridlock

every day.

There is still no visible change in this regard as the city’s roads and footpaths still remain illegally occupied by construction materials despite drives by the authorities concerned.

We think capital Dhaka’s two city corporations will take immediate drastic measures to free its roads and footpaths from such illegal occupation that continues to obstruct the free and smooth movement of pedestrians.

Bangladesh Post ran a story on Saturday titled “Building materials heaped on pavements violating laws”.

We still believe that the two city fathers’ firm determination

to turn the capital into a livable, beautiful, dynamic,

well-governed, and modern city will not be a dream only

The report says construction materials are being stored on roads or sidewalks causing various problems like obstruction of pedestrians’ movement.

It was noticed that several drives were launched; seized construction materials and those materials were sold at an immediate auction on the spot.

And the two mayors of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Atiqul Islam made their stand clear against any sort of illegal occupation, issuing warning that none would be spared in this regard.

Earlier during a drive DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said nobody would be allowed to do business keeping construction materials on the roads and footpaths.

But a section of influential people did not pay heed to the mayors warning, continued occupying the footpaths and roads by keeping construction materials.

It is an offence to obstruct the free passage of the pavement as those are made to ensure pedestrians’ safe and hassle-free walk.

Apart from the regulatory body, we think people will also have to come forward and support the city corporations to keep the pavements clear as the capital Dhaka is the beloved city to all of us and we earn our livelihood from here.

We still believe that the two city fathers’ firm determination to turn the capital into a livable, beautiful, dynamic, well-governed, and modern city will not be a dream only.

If they work hard they would be able to make the dream real.
