BSMMU Fever Clinic launches 100-bed corona unit

A 100-bed corona unit has been launched at the Fever Clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in view of the surging infections caused by Covid-19. Vice-chancellor Professor DrMdSharfuddin Ahmed inaugurated the corona unit in a ceremony held at BSMMU’s Dr Milton Hall in Dhaka on Thursday. 

During the inauguration ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor said that initially, the patient admission procedure has begun in the Corona unit of Bangladesh BetarBhaban with 50 beds. Later 50 more beds will be added. The current administration has already increased the number of beds by 100 and cabins by 20 after taking charge on March 29. ICU beds will be increased by 10 more. A total of additional 150 corona beds, 10 ICU beds and 20 cabins will be added in the Corona unit considering the spike in the transmission of Covid-19.

In addition, effective measures have been taken to increase the number of high flow nasal cannulas, oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines,s and RT PCR machines. “Our expectation is to provide treatments to the patients admitted in the newly launched corona unit in BetarBhaban and enable them to return home after making complete recovery”, he added.

Sharfuddin Ahmed further said that at present people are getting more affected by the new African variant of coronavirus. 81 percent of people are being affected by this variant. Although the mortality rate of the patients suffering from this variant is low, they experience various long-term problems.  

Responding to a question of journalists, he said, those who do not have a smartphone or are unable to use a smartphone can come to the PCR lab of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and get tested for coronavirus detection through on-spot registration.
