The incumbent government has integrated various commendable initiatives in order to create awareness in people about road safety issues and importance of maintaining discipline on roads.

It needs no mentioning that a number of initiatives have been devised by the government and various  nongovernment agencies to ensure better management of transport sector but the scenario remains unchanged, causing frequent accidents and traffic congestion on roads and highways every day.

There are multiple reasons responsible for the higher number of casualties on roads on a daily basis. Experts blame the unruly mentality of the drivers for 90 per cent of road accidents.

Successful implementation of road safety

policies would require a great deal of

commitment among all the stakeholders

It has become more of a necessity to implement efficient and synchronised safety policies and actions to reduce the number of road accidents and casualties. Certainly, the successful implementation of such policy would require a great deal of commitment among all the stakeholders.

In order to reduce the number of road mishaps, immediate steps should be taken to audit vehicular standards and fitness requirement.  Also authorities concerned should train up all drivers on a regular basis. It is envisaged the rate of accidents will decrease and the dream of a safe road will become a reality.

Earlier in 2018, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association order bus owners to employ drivers on a monthly payroll system instead of the current contractual payment. However, no progress has been made in this regard and road safety still remains a far cry. It is disconcerting to note that neither the bus owners nor the staffs of buses are willing to implement the new system.

Experts are of the opinion that trip-base earning is one of the major reasons behind chaos on the roads. Such a system leads drivers to compete with each other to get more passengers. Hence, without bringing the bus staff under the monthly payroll system, the situation will not improve.
