Reaffirming her government’s tough stance against any corruption and irregularities, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina repeatedly issued warning against all, particularly public servants involved in corruption. But all the sectors of the country are yet to get rid of the menace as little action has been taken against the corrupt officials and employees by the authorities concerned.

A section of officials and employees is resorting to corruption across the country despite the government’s zero-tolerance policy against the social rot. We do not understand why there should be such corrupt practices when the government has enhanced the salaries, allowances and other privileges of the public servants.

Corruption is still one of the major concerns in our country despite the government hard stance against graft.

Bangladesh Post on Monday ran a story headlined ‘Corruption rife in BIWTC’, saying some BIWTC officials have been repairing, selling, buying, giving charter of BIWTC ships to their favourite companies and persons without following the law of the country, rules and regulations of BIWTC for about 15 years only to loot public money.

Corrupt officials

of BIWTC continues loot

public money

to fill their pockets

The organised corrupt officials of BIWTC continues loot public money to fill their pockets instead of escalating the activities of the organisation’s development porgrammes like procurement of new vessels, rehabilitation and modernisation of old vessels for providing efficient service in the public sector. We just wonder how corrupt government staffs dare to indulge in corruption, showing thumbs to the prime minister’s warning.

The government should not tolerate this corruption. All will be held responsible for their own duties, and all have to perform their duties properly. The public servants, who are involved in corruption, abusing power should be dealt with iron hand and brought to book under the existing law.

All should keep it in mind that development must not be affected in any way. So, the authorities should launch a crackdown against it corrupt officials and employees immediately as people do not want to see corrupt practices in different sectors of the country.

If any official is involved in corruption, he/she should not be spared. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) will have to take more bold steps to combat corruption. The ACC in association with the authorities concerned must ensure exemplary punishment to the corrupt officials of BIWTC as people want to see a society free from corruption.
