BPL players, staff members test Covid-19 positive

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will begin its new season on January 21. With only a few days to go, a handful of cricketers and support personnel have tested positive for Covid-19, confirmed by BCB chief physician Dr. Debashis Chowdhury to Cricfrenzy.

The coronavirus test of the players and staff started from Monday ahead of the BPL. Several people were infected on the first day. The chief physician of the BCB fears that the number may increase further.

"We've started testing players and staff for Covid ahead of BPL. A few of them tested positive," Debashis said.

This year's BPL has six teams competing. No team has entered the bio bubble yet. Even the foreign coaches who had just returned from a trip overseas did not follow quarantine laws.

Stars like Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell are already in the town, while Bangladesh's former coach Steve Rhodes is here as an adviser of Comilla Victorians and former England wicketkeeper-batsman Paul Nixon has arrived in Dhaka to take charge of the head coach role of Chattogram Challengers.

They were intended to progressively enter the bubble starting on January 18 (Tuesday), but the positive Covid results might stymie the process just before the tournament starts.
