Theatre troupe BotTala is set to stage its acclaimed production ‘Marx in Soho’ once again with five consecutive shows scheduled later this month. The performances will take place at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity in Bailey Road, Dhaka, on November 28, 29, and 30.
There will be one show on November 28 and two shows each on November 29 and 30. The play, written by renowned American historian Howard Zinn, has been translated into Bangla by Javed Hussen. Directed by celebrated actor and director Naila Azad, the production promises to bring a fresh perspective to Zinn’s thought-provoking work.
Originally premiered in October 2021, ‘Marx in Soho’ has continued to resonate with audiences. The play imagines the return of Karl Marx, over a century after his death, addressing his unfinished ideas and revisiting the themes he explored in ‘The Communist Manifesto’ and ‘Das Kapital’. Through this, the play connects Marx’s revolutionary ideas to the modern world and explores the relevance of his philosophy in contemporary society. BotTala’s initiative aims to provoke discussions about freedom and equality, encouraging audiences to reflect on Marx’s enduring legacy. According to the troupe, the staging of this production is more relevant than ever in today’s socio-economic climate.
The probable cast of the play includes Humayun Azam Rewaz and Umma Habiba, who are expected to bring Marx and other characters to life on stage. This is a joint production of BotTala and Jatrik, two organizations known for their dedication to promoting impactful storytelling.
Tickets for the shows will be available soon, and theatre enthusiasts are encouraged to experience this powerful play that combines historical narrative with contemporary relevance.
