As therainy season has just begun, flood waters have also started coming into the river. The demand for boats due to that increases during the monsoon time in flood prone areas. From the beginning to the end of the monsoon, the fishermen of the riverside areas are busy fishing day and night by boat that are the only means of transportation for the people of the low lying areas of the char region. Boats are also used for river-crossings from one village to another.
Boats have been used in riverside villages for centuries at Tangail. As a result, the boom of boat building started at the beginning of the rainy season and flood. Boat making and trading at Tangail has been in full swing for a few days now. Like every year, the boat builders are being busy again. The time is busy for the craftsmen to build new boats and repair old boats.
Going to the boat making factories of different areas, it is observed that the builders are spending their busy time in making boats. Someone is busy chopping wood with a saw while someone is hammering nails into the boat with a hammer. Someone has also been seen selling re-made and repaired boats.
A craftsman, Sikandar Ali said that even though they build boats all year round, their business increases several times during the rainy season. Boats of different sizes are being made, prices are also different. Each boat is being sold at Tk 3,000 to Tk 8,000. “We sell boats made before the rainy season, many people also pay in advance to build boats," he said.
Motaleb Mia, a buyer of the boat, said, “I am from Sirajganj, looking around at the design and size of the boat. I will go with the order to make the boat by bargaining. Saidur Rahman said, “my house is at Basail, water has not entered there yet, I came to see the boat. If I get a lower price, I will buy it in advance.”
