Bimal Krishna Biswas, Md Babul Sheikh and Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan have emerged victorious as the chairmen of Kotalipara, Tungipara and Sadar upazilas respectively in Gopalganj district.
They were elected unofficially in the first phase of Upazila Parishad elections that took place in three upazilas of the district on May 8.
In Kotalipara Upazila, Bimal Krishna has been elected as the chairman securing 40,271 votes with inkpot-pen symbol while Debdulal Basu elected as the vice-chairman bagging 69,537 votes with tube well symbol and Jasmine Begum elected as the woman vice-chairman getting 45,989 votes with pitcher symbol.
In Tungipara Upazila, Md Babul Sheikh emerged victorious as the chairman garnering 40,778 votes with inkpot-pen symbol while Maolana Abdul Wahab Sheikh was elected as the vice-chairman bagging 20,973 votes with aeroplane symbol and Parul Begum won the post of woman vice-chairman securing 16,037 votes with duck symbol.
In Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan (Lutul) was elected as the chairman bagging 31,354 votes with telephone symbol while Sushil Biswas (Shipon) elected as the vice-chairman getting 28,240 votes and Nirunnahar won the post of woman vice-chairman garnering 54,026 votes with duck symbol.
The two remaining upazilas of the district -- Muksudpur and Kashiani -- will go to polls on May 21 in the second phase of Upazila Parishad elections.
