Bike accidents account for 41.48 pc of deaths

At least 376 people including 38 women and 51 children were killed and 1,500 were injured in 283 road accidents in Bangladesh in 14 days before and after Eid-ul-Fitr (from April 25 to May 8) during Eid journey.

A total of 156 people were killed in 128 motorcycle accidents, which is 41.48 percent of the total deaths, according to a report of Road Safety Foundation.

The findings of the report were provided in a press release issued by the organisation on Thursday.

The Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on information collected from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and electronic media.

The accidents killed 54 pedestrians, accounting for 14.36 percent of the total deaths and 49 drivers and assistants of vehicles, accounting for 13 percent of the total deaths.

During this time, at least five people were killed and two were injured in seven waterway accidents and two people went missing. 

Moreover, 19 people were killed and three others were injured in 17 railway accidents.

The observation and analysis of Road Safety Foundation states that 132 (46.64 percent) of accidents occurred on national highways, 87 (30.74 percent) on regional roads, 41 (14.48 percent) on rural roads and 23 (8.12 percent) accidents took place on urban roads.

A total of 156 people were killed in 128 motorcycle accidents during the Eid journey, accounting for 41.48 percent of the total deaths. 

During the Eid-ul-Fitr journey of 2021, 134 people were killed in 121 motorcycle accidents. As of this year, motorcycle accidents have increased by 5.74 percent and fatalities by 16.41 pecrent.

Time analysis showed that 4.94 percent of the accidents occurred in the early hours, 26.85 percent in the morning, 24.73 percent in the noon, 21.90 percent in the afternoon, 8.12 percent in the evening and 13.42 percent of the accidents occurred at night.

Dhaka division witnessed the highest number of accidents and deaths, with 106 deaths in 83 accidents. 

Sylhet division saw the lowest number of accidents. At least nine people were killed in seven accidents in Sylhet division.

Dhaka district witnessed the highest number of accidents as a single district as well, with 19 accidents. The highest number of people was killed in the Natore district. At least 18 people died there. 

A small number of accidents occurred in Shariatpur, Khagrachhari, Narail, Jhalokati, Thakurgaon and Netrokona districts but no fatalities were reported.
