Bhat flowers herald arrival of spring

Bhat flower is a specialty of spring season. Many people also call it forest jasmine. This small shrub is highly neglected as it grows almost everywhere. Although Bhat is considered as a spring flower as it starts flowering at the beginning of the month of spring, flowers can be seen on the Bhat tree till summer. This year, even though the Bhat trees have flowers, blossoming of this flower is still to be seen. The sweet aroma of this flower attracts various insects including bees. Bees collect honey from bhat flowers. Bhat flowers are flattened fruit.

Scientific name of this species is Clerondendrom viscosum. This green perennial, flowering plant is a well-known wild plant in rural Bengal. Bangladesh, Myanmar and India are the native habitats of this plant. This year, Bhat trees can be seen on the Chatmohar-Handial road in Pabna, along various roads including the Chatmohar railway, in the vicinity of houses and in the fallow lands. These medicinal plants are 3 to 4 meters tall. The rough leaves are 4 to 6 inches long. 

It is known that the juice of Bhat leaves relieves fever. It is usually prescribed for the children as it has no negative affects on the body. The followers of Sanatan religion organize Bhat puja with Bhat flowers. 

Helps in curing various diseases including cancer, worms, itching, diarrhoea. It also helps control cholesterol and bad sugar levels. However, it is not very recognized.
