With concerns growing over conducting public examinations amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Bangladesh Exam Development Unit (BEDU) has put forward six different proposals regarding the Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Junior Dakhil Certificate (JDC) examinations.

According to the proposals, it is said to conduct these examinations by December by shortening the syllabus of eighth grade.

However, if the coronavirus situation does not improve, the students will be passed promoted to the ninth grade without taking part in the examinations.

Referring to a UNICEF report, BEDU mentioned that at least 84 countries including India, Nepal, China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, the USA and UK either postponed or suspended the examination.

BEDU sent the proposals regarding JSC and JDC examinations to the education ministry through the Chairman of the Dhaka Education Board.

About the proposals, Secondary and Higher Education Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain said, “The education ministry is reviewing them, and will decide after completing the overall review.”

If it is possible to continue the academic activities from September to November, the JSC-JDC examinations can be conducted by shortening the syllabus as it is not possible to complete the syllabus within these three months, BEDU said in the first proposal.

According to the second proposal, the examinations can be conducted with multiple choice questions if the coronavirus situation does not improve by September to November. In this case, one hour long examination will be taken that would include 50 marks from each subject.

In the third proposal, BEDU proposed to reduce the subjects. In this case, they proposed to keep only Bangla, English, Mathematics and Science in the eighth grade examination.

According to the fourth proposal, it has been said to conduct the examinations with the same question papers for all boards. Time will be saved and equality will be ensured for all education board students through this proposal.

In the fifth proposal, it has been said to conduct the examinations in each school by shortening the syllabus. It can be done if the coronavirus situation remains under control in November. The results of these school-based examinations must be sent to the education board.

Finally, it has been said in the last proposal that students will be automatically promoted to the next class if it is not possible to take any examination. In this case, the rest of the examinations of the class can be adjusted with the next class.

According to guardians of eighth grade students, the government should make the decision quickly about the eighth grade as students and parents are concerned about it.

Rasheda K Chowdhury, an adviser to a former caretaker government, said on the overall issue, “The alternative proposals of BEDU for JSC and JDC examinations can be taken into consideration. But in the existing situation, the final examination of primary education certificate (PEC) should not be taken in any way. The students can be passed to sixth grade on the basis of school assessment.”
