Several thousands of people at Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet have been suffering for lack of a permanent bridge over the Fulmolik canal at Ramdabazar area of upazila.

People have to cross the canal by light boats risking their lives, especially in the rainy season.

Apart from the adults, school-going students, patients and children also use boats with great difficulties.

Locals said that people of several villages use this canal every day to go to district headquarters.

Ali Hussain, an inhabitant of Fulmolik village, said that due to lack of a concrete bridge people of this area have been suffering for long time. He urged the authorities concerned to construct a concrete bridge over the canal in order to alleviate the plight of the common people.

Earlier local people have made their demand several times to the local MP Nurul Islam Nahid, while he visited the area during his election campaign. However, no visible actions have been taken yet to solve this problem, alleged the sufferers.

Apart from Beanibazar upazila, many people from Gulapganj upazila also use this canal to come to Ramdabazar as this road is the shortest way possible.

Miftha Uddin, a resident of Angura Mohammadpur village, said that they have appealed to the authorities concerned several times to solve this problem, but the authorities paid no heed.

Local LGED engineer said, local MP is aware of the matter, and he will take necessary steps after getting the directives from higher authorities.

When contacted, Abul Kashem Pollob, Chairman of Beanibazar Upazila Parishad, said that it is necessary to build a permanent bridge in this area. They have already talked to their local MP about this matter and he has shown eagerness to build a bridge in this area as soon as possible. People of three upazilas will be benefited after building the bridge, he added.
