Bean cultivation benefits farmers of Chuadanga

Price of newly harvested beans is now increasing making happy of bean farmers in Chuadanga district. Bean growers are making good profit by selling crops at high price. Thus, farmers in the area are happy to maintain their family expenditure smoothly. 

Farmers planted bean in the month of May and started harvesting in middle of August. Produced beans are being expected at tk. 57,00,00,000 by selling  this season in the district. 

According to Agriculture Extension Department, farmers have brought 950 hectares of land in the district under beans cultivation in this summer season. Of the total bean have been cultivated on 400 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 50 hectares of land in Alamdanga, 300 hectares of land in Damurhuda and 200 hectares of land in Jibannagar upazila.

It may be mentioned that beans were cultivated in the district on 850 hectares of land last year at the same season. 

Khairul Islam, a farmer of village Kukiachandpur in Sadar upazila of the district said, he has been cultivating bean from 2008. At present bean is being grown on 1.5 bighas of land. He is selling it at Tk. 100 per kg. In the meantime, he has sold beans worth Tk. 30,000 from his farming field. He is expecting Tk. 1,50,000 by selling bean this summer season from his field. 

While visiting some farming areas of Garabaria, Kukiachandpur, Dinnathpur, Uktoand  Alukdia, it was found that farmers were nursing their bean fields with much enthusiasm. The plants are covered with green leaves, multicolor flowers and beans. 

Mohammad Hares Mia, a farmer of village Dinnathpur said that he cultivated bean on one bigha of land. 

His expenditure was estimated Tk.30,000. He sold bean worth Tk. 30,000 up till now. 

Abdur Razzak of village Khadimpur in Alamdanga upazila said the farmers are now not dependent on selling their cash crops in nearly haats and bazaars because the wholesalers are seen purchasing all seasonal vegetables from the farming fields directly like beans.

Mostafizur Rahman, Sub-assistant Agriculture Officer of Chuadanga Sadar said that bean cultivation does not need heavy watering or nurturing. Most of the farmers are using shallow machines for irrigation.

Sufi Muhammad Rafiquzzaman, District Training Officer of DAE said,`We advise them to follow `Item System’ for preventing insects attack in the field. 

Besides we teach them practically at the field on use of fertilizers, prevention of insects attack, irrigation and modern technology.
