Under- 19 world cup winner Shamim Hossain Patwari got his maiden chance in the T20 squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief selector Minhazul Abedin Nannu is pinning his hopes on the young all-rounder. He believes that with Shamim, Bangladesh will be beneficial in a short format.
In shorter formats cricket, Bangladesh has been suffering from a lack of a complete finisher for the last few years. Although they tried with Nasir Hossain and Sabbir Rahman, they could not settle down as finishers. In the last two series, Afif Hossain had the chance but could not shine properly.
At the end of the World Cup, he was brought under the Bangladesh High-Performance Unit (HP). The 20 years older has been performing regularly since then.
In a domestic tournament Bangabandhu T20 Cup, Shamim excelled in scoring runs with great fielding ability.
He also performed brilliantly against Ireland Wolves. In the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL), he has shined with the bat at a 149.58 strike rate.
“Shamim joined our high-performance unit after finishing the under-19 team. Then Ireland A (Ireland Wolves) came here. He has been monitored from there. He (Shamim) played well enough against Ireland A team,” Nannu said.
“He (Shamim) also played well in our shorter version of cricket. Hopefully, in the shorter version with his skills, we will benefit a lot” he added.
Shamim is the second player who got a chance in the national squad from the U-19 world cup winning team after Shoriful Islam.
