A 27-year-old Bangladeshi-American bride was gang-raped during an armed robbery at her husband’s home in Tia Khali, Kalapara, early on Monday.
The woman, who arrived from the United States two months ago, had been sleeping beside her school-teacher husband when seven to eight robbers cut through a veranda grille and stormed the single-storey house. Holding everyone – including two small children and an elder sister – at gunpoint, they bound their hands, feet and mouths and herded them into another room.
Four attackers then raped the bride in front of her restrained husband before looting 13 bhori of gold jewellery and Tk 50,000.
Police later escorted her to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital for examination and have detained two suspects, raids continue to arrest the rest.
Superintendent of Police Anwar Zahid inspected the scene on Monday night, while fear of further arrests has reportedly left the neighbourhood’s male population in hiding.
