Bangladesh sets unique example over refugee shelter

Turkish Ambassador in Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan has said that Bangladesh has set a unique example of humanity by sheltering refugees. He made the remarks while visiting Chittagong port on Sunday afternoon.

The five-member delegation exchanged views with Rear Admiral SM Abul Kalam Azad, Chairman, Chittagong Port Authority.

Referring to Turkey as a friendly Muslim country of Bangladesh, the Ambassador said that the two countries have historically good relations and the people-to-people relations between the two countries are very good.

Stating that Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan will visit Bangladesh next March on the occasion of Mujib Year and the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, the ambassador said there is an opportunity to increase trade and investment in various sectors between the two countries.  Although the geographical distance is greater, the two countries are tied in a thread of brotherhood.

A lot can be achieved for the two countries if mutual trust and good economic relations are maintained.

Port Chairman SM Abul Kalam Azad said Turkish investors could invest in the construction of Dhaka-based container depots with rail and road connectivity in Bangladesh.

There is also an opportunity to invest in Matarbari deep seaport in the future.  Besides, Turkey has the potential to invest in the Mirsarai Special Economic Zone.  Apart from that, there is an opportunity for joint investment of Bangladesh and Turkey in the shipbuilding industry. At the beginning of the meeting, Chittagong Port Member (Administration and Planning) Md. Zafar Alam gave a power point presentation to the Turkish delegation on the overall activities of the port, various development projects and future plans for the development of the port.

The meeting was attended by Chittagong Port Authority Member (Finance) Md. Kamrul Amin, Member (Harbor and Marine) Commodore Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman, Director (Administration) Md. Mominur Rashid, Deputy Conservator Capt. Faridul Alam, Director (Security) Lt. Col. Mostafa Arif-Ur-Rahman Khan, Director (Transport) Enamul Karim, Secretary Md. Omar Faruq, Chief Hydrographer Commander M Arifur Rahman.
