Bangladesh is sending 100 tonnes of food items and drugs to Maldives which is facing serious economic crisis due to the coronavirus spread. A large number of undocumented Bangladeshi workers became jobless there as the tourism, which is the main source of Maldives’ income, plummets sharply due to travel restrictions.

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen confirmed to Bangladesh Post on Sunday that they were preparing to send the ship with food items and drugs on Monday. A senior official at the foreign ministry said those food items would also be distributed among the Bangladeshi expatriates.

About 38,000 undocumented Bangladeshi workers are living there in Maldives. The Maldives foreign minister earlier talked with Dr Momen and requested him to take back those workers who do not have anything to do at this time of crisis.
