Today marks the 49th Independence Day for Bangladesh, a country born out of bloodshed and sacrifice. On this day, the independence of our nation was declared by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Today we must pay our due respects to him as he gave us our long-awaited freedom.
Sadly, we will not be able to observe and celebrate our independence as the country has been plunged into deep crisis due to the global pandemic of coronavirus. Like many countries around the world, Bangladesh is also gripped with fear of the contagious disease.
Due to the extreme contagiousness of the virus, many healthcare systems around the world have been exhausted and countries like Italy and Iran are struggling to contain the virus. Many are now fearing the same situation in the country, where the number of cases is around 39 cases and increasing.
On the occasion of our Independence Day, we must
pledge to protect our country and people by practicing
social distancing and self-quarantine
On the occasion of our Independence Day, we must pledge to protect our country and people by practicing social distancing and self-quarantine. We must put the needs of the many before our own and do our part to prevent the virus from devastation our nation.
So far authorities have declared a ban on passenger travel via water, rail and on domestic air routes from March 24 while all public transport on roads will be suspended from March 26 to stem the spread of virus. Despite this, many people are not heeding any warnings and going out, putting themselves and others at risk.
This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable as it shows our lack of regard for our own country and its people. While our predecessors laid down their lives for us to become a free nation, we are simply failing to prove our love for the country. On this Independence Day, let us hope that we remember the great values that our nation was founded upon and strive to take it forward.
