We recall the uncompromising and charismatic leadership of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with profound respect as he was a great visionary statesman of international stature marking his homecoming day today (Wednesday).

Sheikh Mujib, the greatest Bangali of all time was a leader of the masses and he made the supreme sacrifice for the people. The historic Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu will be observed today (Wednesday) across the country in a befitting manner.

The ruling Awami League led by Sheikh Mujib’s daughter Sheikh Hasina’s absolute victory in the 12th national parliamentary elections held on January 7, has added a new dimension to the celebration of the Homecoming Day of the Bangabandhu.

Sheikh Mujib, the undisputed leader of the nation and supreme commander of the country’s Liberation War, returned to the sacred soil of independent Bangladesh via London and New Delhi on January 10 in 1972, after 290 days of confinement in Pakistan jail. Therefore, ultimate fulfillment of the much awaited victory of the Bengali nation came on this day, 1972 with the return of Father of the Nation to his homeland.

The day is the most memorable one in the life of the  Bangalis. Though the Bangalis achieved ultimate victory on December in 16 1971 through armed struggle, the true essence of victory came into being upon returning home of the Father of the Nation.

So, the nation’s expectations were fulfilled and the people got the real taste of victory with the homecoming of the Bangabandhu on January 10, 1972. Bangabandhu was subjected to inhuman torture in the Pakistan jail where he had been counting moments for the execution of his death sentence that was pronounced in a farcical trial.

Earlier, on March 26 in 1971, Bangabandhu proclaimed independence of Bangladesh and urged people from all strata of life to participate wholeheartedly in the nation's War of Liberation. Immediately after the proclamation of independence, Bangabandhu was arrested by Pakistani military junta and then flown to erstwhile West Pakistan to keep him in prison there.

On reaching Dhaka (Tejgaon) airport in the afternoon on this day, Bangabandhu was greeted by tens of thousands of jubilant people who had been eagerly waiting to have a glimpse of their beloved leader since the victory on December 16 in 1971.

Bangabandhu took the oath of office as the country’s Prime Minister on January 12, 1972.

Since the childhood as the country’s common people’s misery touched him his tender heart Bangabandhu decided to bring smile on their faces at any cost. Therefore, he always fought for the soil and people of the country until his death.

Sheikh Mujib overcame thousands of storms and brought freedom which was cherished by the Bengalis for thousands of years. The charismatic leadership and personality of Bangabandhu had brought the whole nation under one umbrella.

As a result of which we got the independent and sovereign Bangladesh, and the Bangali nationalism flourished. Bangla, Bangladesh and Bangabandhu emerged as a single and identical symbol to the people of Bangladesh.
