Thieves broke into several homes in the upscale Banani and Gulshan areas of the capital on Wednesday night, sparking concern among residents.

Family members of the affected households said criminals entered by climbing over walls and cutting through grilles before stealing valuable items. Beyond the financial loss, they expressed deep worry about the deteriorating security situation in the neighbourhood.

Mokhlesur Rahman, a resident of Banani Road No. 11, said he believes the criminals have become emboldened due to fewer routine patrols by law enforcement agencies. He added that the unusual late-night movement of unfamiliar people has further heightened residents’ anxiety.

Abdul Salam, a security guard in the Gulshan area, noted that unidentified individuals often arrive under the cover of night to take pictures of buildings.

“When we question them from our safe position, they leave quickly without responding, which raises serious suspicion,” he said.

Alarmed by these incidents, Banani residents are urgently calling for stronger security measures. They are demanding regular patrols by the police and army, believing that increased visible presence of security forces would deter criminals and prevent further stealing in the area.
