The Bangladesh Jewellers' Association (BAJUS) on Tuesday gave a written proposal for including its leaders in the Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

They also proposed to amend the law to ease the gold trading in the country avoiding legal hassles.

BAJUS, a platform for the gold traders of the country handed over the proposal during a meeting with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal at his Secretariat office in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday.

BAJUS spokesperson, Dr Dilip Kumar Roy disclosed the news after the meeting with the Home Minister.

The BAJUS leaders also demanded its representatives, including the president and general secretary, to be a part of anti-smuggling activities and the law and order committee at divisional and district levels. Dr Dilip Kumar Roy said, " We discussed many issues with theminister. The gold business in the country is facing various crises.”

“In the past, the home minister played crucial roles in solving many problems and he also committed to solving our problems in the future as well,” the BAJUS leader continued.

BAJUS alleged that jewellers are often harassed by law enforcement agencies while transporting gold. BAJUS demanded ensuring proper measures so that the law enforcement forces do not harass them if they show a copy of the organisation's challan, the carrier's NID and Bajus identity card during the transportation of gold ornaments.

Referring to the incidents of theft and robberies that have occurred in jewellery shops across the country, the senior BAJUS leader said, "As per the current law, the police station accepts the cases as general theft. But gold is a precious metal. So, a proposal was prepared to amend the law."

"According to the gold policy of the country, gold can be imported and exported," he said, adding that there are some legal hurdles in this regard due to which it is not possible to determine gold prices as per the international market.
