The Zimbabwean officially became the new president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday, a nomination that took place during an emotional ceremony held at the entity's headquarters in Lausanne, where her German predecessor Thomas Bach handed her the symbolic golden key to the Olympic House.

At 41 years of age, Kirsty Coventry took on the presidential baton, opening a new era by becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the institution founded by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. The former swimmer is now the tenth leader of the body that governs world sport, which bid farewell to Thomas Bach and his 12-year mandate with full honours. The German steps down from his duties but will remain Honorary President for life.

The Olympic champion, who now faces eight years in office, was elected as president on 21 March in an electoral process in which she defeated six other candidates, all men, by securing the necessary majority in the first round. Over the past few months, Coventry and Bach have worked side by side in a smooth transition that culminates for her this week with her official proclamation, meetings with leaders of the national committees, and the first Executive Board of the new IOC.  The official handover ceremony began at the Olympic headquarters to the sound of music, with a piano performance of Chariot of Fire, the famous piece by Greek composer Vangelis, traditionally associated with the Olympic spirit. With this moving statement of intent, the proceedings were presented by Jochen Färber, Chief of the Olympic Channel Office in Lausanne, and the opening speech was given by IOC Director General Christophe De Kepper, who welcomed the attendees. From there, the event continued with the screening of a tribute video dedicated to the now former president, filled with images that summarised his leadership through the years. At the end, Bach took the stage to loud applause. "Today is a day of gratitude, of happiness. I have never made this journey alone. I want to thank the IOC members; your trust and support have guided me. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but we overcame difficult moments by staying united," said the German, visibly moved.

"The strength of the Olympic Movement would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire community. Olympic values are more present than ever, and we have a bright future ahead," declared Bach, who expressed admiration for his successor. "I pass the baton to a new generation; a new chapter full of opportunities begins. I leave with a sense of peace, knowing that I gave everything I had. It has been a respectful transition. With Kirsty we have built a strong bond, from Olympian to Olympian. I know she will lead the IOC with conviction and her unique style. She is a powerful new voice for new generations. With Kirsty Coventry, the Olympic Movement is in the best possible hands," he stated.
