Opposition BNP, along with some of its like-minded parties on Saturdaystaged agitations countrywide in support of their 10-point demand, including resignation of the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and holding the next general election under a non-party caretaker government.

On the other hand, the ruling Awami League (AL) and all of its affiliated bodies remained vigilant so that the opposition parties could not take any chance of creating chaos or anarchy in the name of anti-government movement.

The ruling party and its affiliated bodies also held several peace rallies in capital Dhaka and almost all the districts across the country.

As part of the ongoing simultaneous movement, the BNP, its associate bodies and like-minded parties formed human chains in all divisional cities and district towns, except inMymensingh.

The BNP earlier had announced the programme after its road marchprogramme in all thanas under the divisional cities last week.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, members of the Standing Committee and central leaders took part in the human chains.

In capital Dhaka, the BNP and its like-minded parties formed the human chains at around 11:00am with banner, festoons in their hands. The party leaders, supporters and activists joined the programmes from different parts of the cities.

Meanwhile, the ruling Awami League and its affiliated bodies on Saturday remained vigilant during the whole day and held several rallies in the afternoon in the capital’s Bangabandhu Avenue, Banani, Bijoynagar, Farmgate and Mirpur areas.

Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Qamrul Islam said that there is no scope to go beyond the constitution in holding elections.

The AL leader said these while addressing a peace rally organised by the South City unit of AL in front of AL's central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in protest against BNP's anti-state conspiracy.

Noting that the BNP leaders have behaved inhumanely by not going to court for party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, he said that even after being punished, Khaleda Zia has been allowed to stay home on humanitarian ground.

"The government does not influence the court. There is no government interference in it," he added.

With president of Dhaka South City unit of AL Abu Ahmed Mannafi in the chair, the peace rally was addressed, among others, by the party's Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Aminul Islam Amin and Central Committee Member Advocate SanjidaKhanam.
