An alleged member of an autorickshaw-lifting gang was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives at Badekolpa in the district town on early Monday, report agencies.

The deceased was identified as Khalil, 37, son of Abdul Jalil of Bakchala village in Fulbaria upazila.

Shah Kamal Akanda, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of police, said being tipped off that a gang of auto-rickshaw thieves were selling stolen vehicles in the area a DB team raided the area around 1am.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on police, prompting them to fire back in self-defence that triggered a gunfight, the OC added.

Later, Khalil was rescued with bullet injuries and police took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police recovered two auto-rickshaws and a locally made pipe gun from the spot, the OC said. He said Khalil was wanted in eight cases.
