Australia’s support to Bangladesh over higher education, research to continue

Australian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Julia Niblett has said that Australian government has been providing support to Bangladesh in development of higher education and research improvement. The support will continue.

Julia Niblett said these while addressing as the chief guest at a prize giving ceremony in Khulna University on Monday. Life Science School of Khulna University arranged the event at Journalist Liakat Ali Auditorium on the campus following Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

Vice Chancellor of Khulna University Prof Dr Mohammad Fayekuzzaman also spoke at the event with Dean of Life Sciences School Prof Dr Md Raihan Ali in the chair. Convener 3MT Competition Organising Committee and professor of Agro-technology discipline Prof Dr Shameem Ahmed Kamal Uddin Khan delivered the welcome speech, while member secretary of the committee and teacher BGE discipline Dr Ahsan Habib announced the result of final phase of the competition. Heads of different disciplines were present at the time. 

Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Julia Niblett opined that alongside the Bangladesh government, universities of the country could take joint initiative with Australian universities over research and higher education.

She lauded the role of Khulna University in education sector and peaceful environment of education on the campus. She said that the 3MT competition ended with international standard and good researchers would come through such initiative. Synopsys of thesis presented by the students of the university in3MT competition is important also in outside the country, she said.

The Australian High Commissioner thanked the students for their innovation. 

In his welcome speech, Prof Dr Shameem Ahmed Kamal Uddin Khan they organised the Three-Minute Thesis competition for the students to present their research work so that their research capabilities and communication skills are improved. The competition has been arranging since 2017 to encourage students of various disciplines to come forward and share their research work, he added.

The competition was initiated by Queensland University of Australia and is now globally recognised. Khulna University has been the first institution to adopt this competition in Bangladesh.

A total of  12 students took part in the final phase. Among them, Rahagir Salekin of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE) discipline became champion of the competition, while Fablia Roudoshi of BGE discipline and Ainun Nishat Farabi of Forestry and Wood Technology discipline emerged as runners-up jointly and Asit Kumar Dutta of Pharmacy discipline received the People's Choice award.
