Aupee’s ‘Mayar Jonjal’ wins Best Picture award at RFFin London

Versatile actress of Dhallywood industry actress Aupee Karim starrer Bangladesh-India co-production film titled ‘Mayar Jonjal’ (Debris of Desire) won the Best Picture award at the 23rd Rainbow Film Festival (RFF) in London, UK. The news was confirmed through the festival's official website.

The 23rd Rainbow Film Festival started on May 29 and was inaugurated by Rushanara Ali, the first Bengali MP from UK. The ceremonies came to an end on June 5.  

The organiser of the Rainbow Film Festival, is a non-profit charity in the United Kingdom. It works to increase cultural awareness in the UK. 

At the festival, prizes are given in various subjects. N Rashed Chowdhury's "Chandrabati Kotha" received a special Rainbow Film Society Mention. The festival also screened various Bangladeshi movies along with Asian films in different categories at this year's event.

Chinese film titled ‘Yangzhen's Journey’ won the title of Best Film on Humanity while Indian film ‘Bhoka’ received a Covid special mention and also recognised as Best Short Film, Best Documentary and Special Jury Mention. Sri Lanka's Sarath Kothalawala and Kumara Thirimadura jointly won the Best director award for ‘The Newspaper.’

The matter was confirmed by the producer of the film Jasim Ahmed. He said, “the film ‘Mayar Jonjal' is shown as the inaugural film of the festival. Apart from Bangladesh, films of Sri Lanka, India, China, Iran, Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, France, Philippines, Iran, Switzerland, Argentina, Armenia and Lithuania were also on display. It is a real pleasure to receive the award for the best film out of so many films."

In the 20th edition of Dhaka International Film Festival DIFF, the Asian Competition featured 'Mayar Jonjal' (Debris of Desire). It was exhibited at the Central Public Library on January 22. 

In the official selection of the Asian New Talent Award at the prestigious Shanghai International Film Festival in China in 2020, 'Maya Jonjal' directed by Indranil Roychowdhury had its world premiere. The European premiere is at the Moscow International Film Festival. In the same year, the film was invited to the Asian Perspectives category at the 15th edition of the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival in Jakarta, Indonesia. The film also won the Best South Asian Feature Film award in the Arthouse Asia Film Festival last year. Earlier, 'Mayar Janjal' got a place in the official selection in Shanghai, China and Moscow, Russia. 

The film ‘Mayar Jonjal’ marks the comeback of renowned actress Aupee Karim on the silver screen after almost 15 years. Her character's name is Soma. The girl is from Kolkata. She is married. Her family with her husband and only child. Her husband Chandu is played by Ritwick Chakraborty, a popular actor from Kolkata.

The screenplay of the film is based on two short stories by Manik Bandyopadhyay. Other characters are Sohail Rana (Satya) from Prachyanat, Paran Bandopadhyay from Kolkata, Chandreyi Ghosh (Beauty) and Bratya Basu (Ganesh Babu). The film was shot in Dhaka and Kolkata.
