ATU arrest five militants

Anti-terrorism Unit, the specialized anti-militant unit of Bangladesh Police  on Wednesday nabbed five top militant from city's Farmgate and Mohammadpur areas.

Among the arrestees, there was acting chief of the banned terrorist outfit  Allah'r Dal.

During the primary militants  the arrested militants  claimed that there are more than 25,000 members, supporters and sympathisers across the country . They were recruiting fresh operatives, collecting funds from many of them.

The arrested militants were identified as Sheikh Kamal, 35, the second-in-command of the group, Moniruzzaman Milon, 42, Sohel Rana, 40, Robi Ahmed Pappu, 37 and Khalekuzzaman 37.

Kamal was working as the acting chief as some top leaders including chief Matin Mehedi are  currently in jail.  

In 2004, he joined the militant outfit through Matin. Later he carrided  organisational duties in Khulna, Gaibandha region and in the central committee. 

In 2000, Khalekuzzaman got involved in militancy through Matin. He was the chief of the outfit's Dhaka district unit since 2017. Moniruzzaman was a nephew and close aide of Matin.

Sohel joined the outfit in 2018 and his job was to communicate with fellow militants in jails, help them in case proceedings and look after their family members.   

Robi was the chief of the group's Gazipur unit.

A case was filed with Tejgaon Police Station under Anti-Terrorism Act in this connection.
