Asthma is one such disease in our country which is generally looked as a taboo. Those who develop the respiratory ailment tend to avoid talking about it as they feel having asthma is something very disgraceful. However, with proper care and diagnosis, victims can survive a long time.

We know Asthma is a major non-communicable disease (NCD), which affects both children and adults. Though, there is no direct known cause of the disease and no cure as well, steroid inhaler or bronco dilator is the best available treatment option.

There are a lot of misconceptions

related to the disease which affect

the well-being of the patients

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions related to the disease which affect the well-being of the patients. Therefore, we have to launch enough campaigns to raise awareness and let people know that it is not something they should ignore or consider taboo.

There is no recent study about the prevalence of asthma in Bangladesh. An old study of the Asthma Association of Bangladesh suggests that over 5 percent of people suffer from asthma. Of them, 90 percent do not take modern treatment. Therefore, poorly controlled asthma remains a major problem in Bangladesh.

We have to comprehend the importance of inhalation therapy and to adhere it. This is the need of the hour to overcome taboos related to asthma. There are also people who have won their battle against asthma and also the taboos which come with it.

We have to come forward with their examples and let people know about the spirit of those fighters. Much needed awareness about the disease, embracing it, and obedience to the right therapy, all of this can make us conquer asthma.
