Published : 17 Feb 2024 09:22 PM

The aspirants candidates in the upcoming upazila parishad polls had started moving here and there when polls schedule was not announced by the election commission (EC). The tea stalls and other gossiping spots started getting crowdy with the movement of a number of candidates in Jhenaidah sadar.

The situation in Jhenaidah sadar is likely to be changed when the independent candidate Naser Sharier Zahedi Mahul with the symbol Eagle had won Jhenaidah -2 seat comprising Jhenaidah sadar and Harinakundu upazilas. The seat went beyond the clutch of ruling Awami League due to intra-party conflict and dishonour and not for evaluation of the dedicated leaders by a section of party men for years together, said the concerned persons.

Earlier the position of the chairman of Jhenaidah District Council, better known as Zilla Parishad went to another independent candidate, eminent development activist M Harun Or Rashid. The position of the mayor of Jhenaidah municipality earlier went to another Qayum Sharier Zahedi Hizawl, a younger brother to newly elected independent lawmaker Naser Sharier Zahedi Mahul for the same feud. As there will be no party symbol like Boat, the ruling party candidates might face another shock to bag the seat.

Names of ex mayor of Jhenaidah municipality Anisur Rahman Khoka, Incumbent vice chairman as well as acting chairman Rashedur Rahman Rasel, ex vice chairman JM Rashidul Alam, Juba League district unit convener Ashfaque Mahmdu Jon, acting president of Awami league Jhenaidah sadar upazila unit Golam Sarwar Khan Saud and Juba League leader Nur E Alam Biplob are more or less heard. Incumbent vice chairman as well as acting chairman Rashedur Rahman Rasel has been bearing the responsibility with utmost sincerity and honesty when its chairman Abdur Rashid Advocate was died a few months back. Rasel’s father Azizur Rahman Advocate was the general secretary of Awami League Jhenaidah district unit.  The young and energetic man Rasel has a group of fans and well-wishers throughout the district making him popular in politics and social work, concerned said.

Ex mayor and eminent journalist Anisur Rahman Khoka is widely discussed among the people as he had been serving the municipality dwellers with his sincerity since early morning. He had a truck record in keeping the environment of the town “clean” supervising the activities of the cleaners with his mini bicycle. The town turned to a better living area free from mosquito and fly during his tenure from 1993 to 1999.

Based on the experience in providing service to the municipality, the septuagenarian Khoka deserves to serve the people of the upazila. He was sued by the leaders of the then BNP lawmaker Mashiur Rahman and wanted in 20 cases. Of them charge sheets were issued in nine cases. Anisur Rahmn Khoka has been leading Bangladesh Lathial Bahini in Jhenaidah as its general secretary since 2010 and organized at least two thousand persons to protect the people without any arms.

Golam Sarwar Khan Saud is the acting president of ruling Awami league Jhenaidah sadar upazila unit is a proved leader who did not seek nomination for any position earlier. A blind fan of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman desires to contest in the upazila polls if the party nominates him.

He was hopeful about his victory with a remarkable margin of the votes, Saud said.

An influential AL man, ex vice chairman of Jhenaidah upazila parishad JM Rashidul Alam has a personal image among the party leaders and people. Previous  district committee member and general secretary of the thana committee, also outspoken man Saud actually does not bear any position now due feud and conflict in the party, while he was a dynamic leader with bold leadership. He desires to make the educational institutions suitable for learning and bring the students back to their institution and play grounds to make the them patriotic citizens for the Smart Bangladesh as desired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
