Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor, has allocated responsibilities within the 17-member interim government, appointing Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan to head the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This announcement was made on Friday in a notification from the Cabinet Division.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus took his oath as the Chief Advisor of the interim government on Thursday, with President Mohammad Shahabuddin administering the oath at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Following this, the names of 16 advisors were revealed, 13 of whom were sworn in yesterday. The remaining three advisors, who were outside Dhaka, have yet to take their oaths.
Asif Mahmud is a key figure in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He has been notably active on social media during the movement, frequently providing guidance to the protesters via Facebook Live. Transitioning from his role as the coordinator of the ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,’ he has now been appointed an advisor in the interim government.
Asif Mahmud hails from Akubpur village in Muradnagar Upazila, Comilla. His father is Md. Billal Hossain and his mother is Roksana Begum. He is an alumnus of Adamjee Cantonment College, where he served as a platoon sergeant in the BNCC club. He was a student in the Department of Linguistics at Dhaka University during the 2017-18 academic year.
Asif is also a central leader of the ‘Democratic Student Power,’ a group that was launched on October 4, 2023, under the leadership of former DUCSU Social Service Secretary Akhtar Hossain.
