“With my old age complications I was moving here and there to get shelter for me and the family members, while it was an irony of fate. At last DC Madam (deputy Commissioner) had handed over a house for my son where I live with them with satisfaction” said, septuagenarian Hasen Banu at Nepa Bazer Ashrayan Prokalpa (housing project for the landless and homeless) in bordering Moheshpur upazila .

Hasen Banu said she was leading inhuman life when she along the four member family members were living in a shanti where there was no bathroom, latrine, drinking and bathing water and other facilities. Just them the local upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) had assured her of a two-room building house with tin shed. Now they family members do not fear for rain and thunder anyway.

Hasen Banu’s daughter in law Aneha Begum, 36, said her husband Mijanur Rahman is a day labourer and earns a little, while they are very happy to get a shade on their heads.

Another resident in the housing project Shadhan Mridha said a total of 14 landless and homeless destitute families including Hindu Community people have been living in a peaceful environment. Both the religion people share their sorrow and happiness with others.

They take food at others house in any occasion. Most of the settlers involved with day labour selling, farm labour, earth cutting, cobbler work and such low income activities.

UNO Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi when contacted said as per the guidelines of the deputy commissioner (DC) Manira Begum, he along with some of the upazila level government officials had been monitoring the construction and other activities.

The housing inmates are availing pure drinking water, sanitary latrine, kitchen and electricity supplies with no cost.

A drain was also constructed to discharge the waste and other water from the housing project.

Local union parishad chairman of Nepa had a vital role here to select the intending residents, Rajban gshi said.
