Arrest of fraudster Mamimul demanded in Ulipur

Residents of Ulipur upazila in Kurigram held a human chain on Sunday (16 November) demanding the arrest and punishment of Mamimul Islam Bablu, a notorious human trafficker and fraudster. The protest took place at Boromoshjid Mor on the Ulipur-Kurigram road and was organized by local victims of Bablu’s scams.

Speakers at the human chain, including Abdul Majid Mondal, Mohanto Barman, Dulal Hossain, and Zobed Ali, described how Bablu deceived locals by promising to send people to South Korea. The victims claim that Bablu tricked at least 12 individuals into giving him nearly several million taka. In addition to monetary fraud, he allegedly obtained signatures on blank stamps and checks to extort more money later.

Bablu reportedly created fake passports and Korean visas, abandoning the victims at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka before fleeing. He is also accused of sending victims to Nepal under tourist visas to carry out further fraud.

The memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner via the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) details that Bablu’s accomplices—Abu Bakkar Siddiq, Mithu, Manju, and others—were also involved. The number of people affected by Bablu’s schemes is estimated at 20 or more.

The victims expressed frustration over the slow progress of justice, noting that despite filing an official complaint at Ulipur Munsif Court on 17 April 2025, the police have yet to submit an investigation report even after seven months.
