Bangladesh Army on Saturday arrested an armed terrorist who was involved in sensational murder of Naniyarchar Upazila Chairman Advocate Shaktiman Chakma.
Talking to the Bangladesh Post, a responsible official of Bangladesh Army confirmed it.
The arrestee was identified as Mintu Chakma, 39, an armed terrorist of the Prasit Khisha-led United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) .
On secret information, Naniyarchar Army Zone under Rangamati Army Region raided Sonaram Karbaripara area early Saturday, when the armed terrorist secretly came to meet his family.
Later he was arrested with weapons.
Army seized locally made fire arms, two rounds of ammunition, SIM cards of several local mobile companies and four liters of domestic liquor from the possession of the arrestee.
Mintu Chakma was accused in the murder case of Naniyarchar Upazila Chairman Advocate Shaktiman Chakma . After getting bail, he had been absconding for a long time.
During the primary interrogation, the UPDF armed cadre admitted that UPDF terrorists were involved in various terrorist and extortion activities in Naniyarchar area.
The Naniyarchar Army Zone later handed over terrorist Mintu Chakma to the local Naniyarchar Police Station.
A case was filed against him under the Arms Act. He was sent to Rangamati Jail as per court order.
Bangladesh Army will continue such operations against the terrorists in the Chittagong Hill Tracts to maintain peace and order.
Prasit Bikash Khisha formed the UPDF after splitting off from the JSS in 1997 to protest the globally welcomed peace accord’s Shantu Larma signed with the government. Another faction of the JSS split off nearly a decade ago under the leadership of Shudha Shindu Khisha, and came to be known as the JSS (MN Larma).
Naniyarchar Upazila Parishad Chairman, Advocate Shaktiman Chakma, was the vice president of the JSS (MN Larma) central committee.
On May 3 in 2019, Shaktiman Chakma was shot down on his way to an Upazila Parishad meeting. The next day, five of his mourners were gunned down on the way to his funeral.
